What does it mean to eat healthy?
Everyone has their own definition or idea of what constitutes eating or being healthy.
On your quest to fulfill your personal goals, you may be considering adopting certain lifestyle changes revolving around dietary fads like consuming fewer carbohydrates, eating more fat, avoiding gluten, becoming vegan, and/or fasting.
As a first step, you should STOP and PONDER the following:
1. Are these changes beneficial for me? One shoe does not fit all. What might be good for one individual may be detrimental for another. In medicine, specific therapies work better in some patient groups than others.
2. Is what I am considering based on factual, medically endorsed data or anecdotal information? Even in science, findings must be repeatedly confirmed before they become a theory. In today’s virtual ecosystem, we are too quick to assume that a fact is proven.
3. Where should I seek to obtain dietary or health information from? We recommend a trained professional, but you too should take charge of your own health as you know your body best.
4. If factual, you must consider whether the information has been validated across multiple studies? One study alone does not constitute that the information is correct.
5. Is the study cohort large enough to eliminate sample size biases? Findings in hundreds or thousands of subjects, across multiple centers and studies, is often the best. Studies with a small number of subjects can introduce study biases that can result in false conclusions being drawn. In the food industry, it will be imperative to define who should pay for these studies as these types of studies are very costly.
Before you commit to a lifestyle modification, it is imperative that you consider whether it will be beneficial or detrimental to your well-being. Simply put, is what I am about to embark upon going to be good or bad for me in the long run?
Based on our experiences, we find that people either overcomplicate things by attempting to adhere to a specific dietary program or to supplement their dietary regime with nutraceutical formulations that enable faster weight loss. The best course of action to enable improvement in ones’ wellness centers on some common and simple concepts:
1. Reduce Your Stress. Take time out for you.
2. Get Plenty of Sleep. Try to get up to 8 hours a night.
3. Eat Regularly Throughout the Day. Eat up to 6 meals throughout the day, and don’t skip breakfast.
4. Eat Nutritious, Whole, Real Foods. Limit consuming processed foods full of chemicals.
5. Limit Added Sugar and Sugar Types. Added sugars are a treat not a staple in your diet.
6. Exercise. Low impact exercises for 20 – 30 minutes, 2 to 3 times per week is good.
7. Be Present. Have positive and meaningful interactions with the people around you.
8. Drink Water Regularly. Water should be your beverage of choice. Limit sugary beverages.
